Nintendo confirmed that an additional 140,000 Nintendo Network ID accounts have been hacked, which added to the 160,000 cases in April, brings the number to a total of 300,000 compromised accounts.

This was confirmed again on the Nintendo Japan support page, where they indicated that 140,000 NNID accounts have been "maliciously accessed." But despite this, Nintendo remains firm that it is not the cause of a security breach of Nintendo's networks, but that the credentials of these accounts were acquired in a different way.

However, Nintendo has already changed the passwords for the affected accounts and has notified those who were affected. That said, they ensure that only 1% of NNIDs accounts were "illegally accessed." These users are going through refunds of purchases made by these hackers, according to Nintendo.

The confirmation comes after Nintendo revealed in April that 160,000 NNID accounts had been hacked. To be clear, NNID was previously used for Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo Wii, and it is these users who have been affected, as well as those on Nintendo Switch who linked their NNIDs to their Nintendo Account, the system used on Switch. This function has been disabled by Nintendo according to reports from April, but for now the Nintendo Account is maintained.

Affected users should receive an email from Nintendo, but if even if you have not been affected, you should follow the recommendations given by Nintendo in April. These are enabling two-factor / step authentification for Nintendo Account and changing passwords for this account and Nintendo Network ID.
